This page provides information about activities taking place at the site. Further updates will be added as the project continues to develop over the coming months.

  • Preparatory works have begun to enable further site investigation during 2025, this time of the tar lagoon itself. Read more about May 2025

  • To help inform their operational response planning, representatives from the local fire service and the EA attended Hoole Bank tar lagoon in early March to see first hand improved security arrangements and understand access to the site. Read more about March 2025

  • We are currently planning further investigations at the Hoole Bank site in order to give us a better picture of the site as a whole. We are continuing our programme of groundwater and surface water monitoring at locations in and around the site. Read more about March and April 2025

  • New site security features have been installed over the last few weeks. These include a new, secure entrance gate together with rising bollards, as well as works to mend defects in the fenceline and remove vegetation that could present a climbing risk.   • A community meeting is being held on Monday 9th September between 6pm and 7pm at Mickle Trafford Village Hall. The purpose of the meeting is to provide an update on recent works and answer any questions you may have. Read more about September 2024

  • The current phase of intrusive works has been completed at the site. With the permission of landowners, the ground investigation team are now moving into the fields immediately adjoining the site to the east and south. Read more about June 2024

  • A drone survey will take aerial photographs of the lagoon site. The survey, which is planned to take place during April, will present an opportunity to see the site in more detail, particularly now much of the vegetation around the lagoon has been cleared. Read more about April 2024

  • During February and March, work has been ongoing to remove vegetation from areas within the site. This will enable us to undertake more detailed ground investigation activities in in the area to the north of the lagoon itself over the coming weeks, including the digging of trial pits and boreholes.   • Some very targeted vegetation clearance has taken place, in readiness for digging a small number of trial pits as part of wider site sampling activities. Read more about October 2023

  • Tree specialists visited the Hoole Bank site to identify tree species and condition to the north of the main lagoon. Read more about September 2023
