The Environment Agency regulate acid tar lagoons when a local authority has determined them as contaminated land and designated them as a special site under Part 2A of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
We work collaboratively to inspect the land to ensure risks to the environment are understood and the area remains safe. The Environment Agency undertake their duties to ensure that significant contaminant linkages are addressed and that risks to human health and the environment are addressed and adequately dealt with. In many cases this requires remediation of these sites.
